A battlefield tour examining the German airborne invasion of Crete during Operation Mercury (20 May – 1 June 1941) and the operational lessons that directly influenced the subsequent formation of the RAF Regiment in 1942. The programme follows the chronological development of the campaign, beginning with the German parachute and glider assaults on Maleme, Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion, before examining the fierce defence of the island. The tour also explores the campaign’s lasting influence on British airfield defence doctrine and its significance in the creation of the RAF Regiment.
